Love One Another, As I Have Loved You:
Our model is Jesus: he is truly the “first-born among many brethren” (Rm.
8:29). Thus, Christians are called to live, and to love each other, as
Jesus did: “As I loved you, you also like you the ones the others.” If
Jesus is in the Father for a mutual love, then Jesus must also come into
each one of us for a common and universal love! Is this not what is
realized each time it is granted to us to approach the altar of the Lord
in order to receive within us his Body and Blood? Is it not almighty God
who then comes into us in order to take us into himself?
Already, through Eucharistic communion, we can anticipate our ascent into
Heaven! The Most Blessed Virgin Mary understood this very well: when
she saw Jesus rising up into Heaven, in the Glory of God, she followed
her Divine Son in spirit, she held him in her memory forever, in order to
remain forever with Him. Let us ask Our Mother in Heaven to prepare us
for today’s communion: through her almighty prayer, may we already be
with Jesus, glorified in Heaven!

FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER (April 25th, 2010)
“We are his people, the sheep of his flock.” Psalm 100
Good Shepherd Sunday

The image of the shepherd, while not very familiar to city dwellers today, was certainly a very apt and familiar image in Jesus’ time. In our time, it has even taken on a more negative image – the idea that we are sheep, followers, who can’t make up our own minds. Americans like to be self-reliant. But this is in no way, the image that is meant in these readings. It is a protective image of a shepherd who knows better than his sheep where food and water and housing are, and whose prime duty is to take care of the sheep and make sure that they are taken care of and are not left for wolves to snatch and kill. This was a matter of honor of the Mediterranean society of Jesus’ time. Protecting his sheep involved a shepherd’s honor and they would protect that honor to the death, without complaint. This is one of those readings that are difficult for us to understand in our American culture, and so it is important that we recognize the differences in our culture and the culture of Jesus’ time to really understand the beautiful metaphor Jesus was describing.
What we need to take from these reading today besides a cultural understanding, is that we need to listen to Jesus’ voice if we are to receive the protection and care and love of Jesus. To hear and to respond to Jesus’ words is the key to today’s readings and to living a good life. Do we take the time to listen to God’s word in the written word we read on Sundays and see in our Bibles, and to listen to the Word inside us? Remember, each week we take Jesus inside us in the Eucharist and our greatest protection and shepherding comes from within. Take the time to listen to Jesus. Spend some quality time this week with Jesus. Just a few minutes to listen quietly or reflect on his words can change your day. That is how we are nourished. And that is how we shall be judged.
