18th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (August 1st, 2010)

“IF TODAY YOU HEAR HIS VOICE, HARDEN NOT YOUR HEARTS.”          PSALM 90

THE MYSTERY OF DIVINE FATHERHOOD

At Mass, all prayer is addressed to the Father through the Son and in the Holy Spirit; that is, it is always the Father who appears to us as the source of every gift:  “Every good endowment and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights…” (Jas 1: 17).  In his presence we feel our unworthiness, but also the permanent possibility that we shall be heaped with good things.

This notion inspires every parable in the Gospels that show us God’s fatherly nature.  For example, the husbandman roused at night by a friend, who starts to send him away but who finally yields to his entreaties; or the father whom children ask for food, “If you, then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him?” (Mt 7: 11)  We are still far from understanding the infinite tenderness of God’s paternal heart.  Perhaps it is because we do not go far enough back to that first origin, divine fatherhood, when we consider the Holy Trinity.  Perhaps we have preferred to stop at the level of the Son and the Spirit, because it is they who were sent to us and we prefer to see God in terms of the fulfillment of his design.

But beyond them is the mystery of divine fatherhood, the absolute first source of all things, the first source of all Creation, the first source of all grace.  This fatherhood is expressed through its manifestation in the world, in creation, where God is the Father who makes his sun shine on the just and the unjust…

It is expressed through Christ’s humanity, the humanity of the only Son, through which we may all become sons in the only Son, since we are caught up in the eternal mystery of divine descent, engendered with the only Son to the life of the only Son by the Father, recreated-as he is begotten-eternally, perpetually recreated in this mysterious process of generation, recreated to this life of grace which leads us into participation in the mystery of eternal redemption.

About Mass Intentions

It is the long-standing tradition of the Church that each Mass have an intention, for either a living person, a person who has died, or a particular intention.  The value of ONE Mass is beyond our imagining, and the practice of having a Mass offered on someone else’s behalf is a reminder of our profound interconnectedness as members of the Body of Christ.  Perhaps there is a deceased relative, a living friend or family member in need, or even an intention which you hold in your heart.  Consider having a Mass celebrated for your intention.  Call the Rectory to book an upcoming Mass.

17th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (July 25th, 2010)

“Lord, on the day I called for help, you answered me.”    Psalm 138

PROGRESS AND GOD’S WORD

Again the same religious appeared on his rung as before and said: “O Judge, I ask you:”…

“Why did you not cause all your words to be heard in a single moment?  Then it would not have been necessary for them to be preached through the intervals of time.”…

“As to why I did not speak all my words in one hour, I answer you:  Just as, materially, it goes against the body for it to take in one hour as much food as might content it for many years, so it is against the divine arrangement that my words, which are the food of the soul, would all have been spoken in one hour.  But just as bodily food is taken in little by little, to be chewed and, when chewed, to be carried to the interior, so my words were not to be spoken in one hour, but rather through the intervals of time, in accord with the intelligence of those who were making progress, in order that the hungry might have something by which to be satisfied and that when satisfied, they might be excited to higher things.”…

16th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (July 18th, 2010)

“He who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord.”          Psalm 15

THE DIVINE LIFE CALLING MARTHA

Holiness is you who have become the Kingdom of God, it is you divinized by the gift of yourself.  Precisely, if we see that this is really about a Presence, about a person-to-person exchange, if we see that each gesture allows us to be in communion with divine life, we will understand that the eternal is now…

That is exactly what we must do. There is no question for us of waiting until the afternoon.  It is now, here…That is where God is waiting for you.  There lies your eternity, your infinite communion, because each human act, if it is a gift of ourselves, is an act creating eternity. There is nothing else to expect.  If you die tonight and your day has been full of God, you will be in eternity because you yourselves will have become eternity.  This is the only way of triumphing over death, by making the “now” eternal.  Here, now, today in the kitchen, bringing the dishes of food to the table, in recreation, before your bills  in your office, it is at every instant that divine life is calling you, that it can circulate through you, communicate itself to others, provided you are attentive to life with its immense dimensions.

God is not someone we can speak about, he is someone we breathe, whom we communicate through the atmosphere emanating from ourselves.  People around you will feel if you are in constant communion with God. There is not a religious action:  it is the whole life that is religious, the whole life or nothing, I repeat, the whole life or nothing…

That is why Our Lord, who wanted to instill in us the infinite dignity of our lives, spent thirty years doing manual labor, a labor that apparently had nothing religious about it, the most ordinary work which he gathered in the Eucharist as bread and wine.

You need no more than that to be in communion with God.  Labor, rest, the daily relationships of humans among themselves, that is religion provided every act is vested with this divine presence and communicates it.
